TRACK: Sharon Van Etten- Every Time The Sun Comes Up
Everyone loves a good slow burner. Sharon Van Etten's latest track Every Time The Sun Comes Up is a perfect example. A lazy bass & keys combo unfold to the song's emotionally raw but cynical lyrics. Sharon's voice is fire and honey throughout, bouncing between humming sweetly and guttural screams. It's catchy enough to keep you listening, and clever enough to make it worthwhile.

GIG: Gloss Rejection / Pet Cat / Horse Rock
Don't be bored/boring, get yourself on down to South Street on Saturday for noise-punk, indie rock and good ol' fashioned luchadore surf rock. (I'm pretty sure that last subgenre includes only Horse Rock). Get on down.

TRACK: Wild Smiles- Fool For You
About fourty years ago, the Ramones figured that if you turn electric guitars up really loud, you can just play three chords over and over again and it sounds cool as shit. As much as we'd all love to pretend we're above it, the same three chords still sounds awesome fourty years on.
Wild Smiles are the latest to pull this off; simple drums, overdrive guitar and reverb heavy vocals. It's one of the oldest tricks in the book, but hell if it doesn't still work.

ALBUM: Ought- More Than Another Day
How much a band shows there influences is always a touchy subject; too much and you're brushed off as derivative, not enough and you end up alienating people. Ought seem to hit a pretty good level. Violent Femmes-meets-Slint almost Punk manages to take just the right level of Gang of Four noise-funk to hit all those sweet nostalgia spots but manage to take it in their own direction.
They're revisionists, not revolutionists, but Ought's debut album is a massively enjoyable display of post-punk anthems.
